Privacy Policy
Effective date: June 17, 2026
Last updated: June 17, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Make Music Count ("we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, shares, and protects information in connection with the Make Music Count mobile application and related websites and services (collectively, the "Service"). Make Music Count is an educational application that turns math practice into a musical experience for students. Our mailing address is 401 Patricia Circle SW, Atlanta, GA 30311, USA.
We are committed to protecting the privacy of all users, and especially the privacy of children and students. By using the Service, you agree to the practices described in this Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
1. Who This Policy Covers
The Service is used by students (including children under 13), parents/guardians, teachers, and school administrators. Some sections of this Policy apply specifically to children and to school use; please read Sections 3 and 4 carefully.
2. Information We Collect
Information you or your school provides
- Account information — name (or display name), email address, role (student, teacher, parent, admin), grade level, and a password or sign-in credential.
- School/roster information — when your school connects through Clever, we receive school name, class/section assignments, teacher–student associations, and student account identifiers (see Section 5).
- Content you submit — song suggestions, uploaded song files (for authorized contributors), and support requests.
Information created through use of the Service
- Learning activity — math problems attempted, answers, quiz and pretest scores, progress by subject, lessons and songs completed.
- Usage data — features used, session timing, and in-app interactions, collected via Google Firebase Analytics.
Information collected automatically
- Device and technical data — device type and model, operating system version, app version, language settings, and crash/diagnostic data.
- Identifiers — a Firebase-generated installation/instance identifier and, where applicable and permitted, an advertising identifier (see Section 7).
We do not collect payment card numbers. Subscription purchases are processed by Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play); we receive only confirmation of purchase status, not your financial details.
3. Children's Privacy (COPPA)
Make Music Count is directed in part to children under the age of 13, and we comply with the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
- We collect from children only the information reasonably necessary to provide the educational Service.
- We do not require a child to disclose more information than is reasonably necessary to participate.
- We do not serve personalized or behaviorally targeted advertising to children. Any advertising shown to children is limited to non-personalized (contextual) ads (see Section 7).
- We do not knowingly sell children's personal information.
Parental rights. A parent or guardian may review their child's personal information, request that we delete it, and refuse further collection or use of it. To exercise these rights, contact us at the email in Section 14. We may need to verify your identity and relationship to the child before acting on a request.
Where a child accesses the Service through a school, the school may provide consent on behalf of parents for the collection and use of student information for educational purposes, as permitted under COPPA's "school consent" provisions (see Section 4).
4. Student & School Data (FERPA)
When Make Music Count is used by a school, district, or teacher, student information is handled as follows:
- We act as a service provider / "school official" with a legitimate educational interest, under the U.S. Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and we process student data under the direction of the school.
- Student data is used only to provide and improve the educational Service for that school — never to build a non-educational profile of a student or to sell student data.
- We do not use student personal information to serve targeted advertising.
- The school controls and owns the student records and may request access, correction, export, or deletion at any time.
Schools are responsible for providing any notices to, and obtaining any consents from, parents that applicable law (including FERPA and COPPA) requires.
5. Clever Integration
If your school uses Clever, you may sign in with Clever and your school may sync rosters to the Service. Through this integration we receive school, section, teacher, and student account data needed to create and maintain accounts and class rosters, including via an automatic nightly resync. We use this data only to operate the Service. Clever's handling of your information is governed by Clever's own privacy policy.
6. How We Use Information
- Provide, maintain, and personalize the learning experience (e.g., adaptive difficulty, progress tracking).
- Create and manage accounts and class rosters.
- Display progress reports to students, parents, teachers, and administrators.
- Send service-related notifications, including push notifications you can disable in your device settings.
- Provide customer support and respond to requests.
- Maintain security, prevent fraud and abuse, and verify legitimate app traffic (Firebase App Check).
- Analyze and improve the Service, including measuring feature usage.
- Comply with legal obligations.
7. Advertising
The Service may display advertising through Google AdMob to some users. Important details:
- Students provisioned through a school or with an active subscription are ad-free.
- For users who are children, or whose age is unknown, we request non-personalized ads only — ads are based on contextual information, not on a profile of the user.
- On iOS, where personalized advertising would otherwise apply, we use Apple's App Tracking Transparency framework to ask for your permission before any tracking across apps or websites occurs. If you do not grant permission, we do not track you for advertising.
For information about Google's advertising practices, see Google's privacy policy.
8. How We Share Information
We do not sell personal information. We share information only as follows:
- With your school — student progress and account data are shared with authorized teachers and administrators at the student's school.
- Service providers — vendors who process data on our behalf and under our instructions (see Section 9).
- Legal and safety — when required by law, to enforce our terms, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of users or the public.
- Business transfers — in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, subject to this Policy.
9. Third-Party Service Providers
| Provider | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Google Firebase (Authentication, Cloud Firestore, Storage, Cloud Functions, App Check, Cloud Messaging) | Account management, data storage, app infrastructure, security, and push notifications |
| Google Firebase Analytics | Usage and performance analytics |
| Google AdMob | Advertising (non-personalized for children; see Section 7) |

These providers are authorized to use personal information only as necessary to provide services to us.
10. Data Retention
We retain personal information for as long as an account is active or as needed to provide the Service, and afterward only as required to comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce agreements. School and student data is retained according to the school's instructions and deleted on request or after the account becomes inactive. When data is no longer needed, we delete or de-identify it.
11. Data Security
We use administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect personal information, including encryption in transit, access controls, and secured cloud infrastructure. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
12. Your Rights & Choices
- Access and correction — you may request a copy of, or correction to, your personal information.
- Deletion — you (or a parent, guardian, or school on a student's behalf) may request deletion of an account and associated data.
- Push notifications — manage these in your device settings.
- Advertising tracking (iOS) — manage tracking permission in your device's privacy settings.
To make a request, contact us at the email in Section 14. We will respond within the time required by applicable law.
13. International Users
The Service is operated from the United States, and information is processed and stored in the United States and other countries where our service providers operate. By using the Service, you understand that your information may be transferred to and processed in the United States.
